Tuesday January 06, 2009 Noon Duty Noon Duty Noon Recess Guidelines Participation in Outdoor Recess It is expected that all students participate in outdoor noon recess. If the student is well enough to be in school, then he/she is well enough to participate in all school activities. Special circumstances do arise with a student’s health that may require him/her to miss recess. In these situations a doctor’s written or verbal notice for the student to be excused from outdoor recess is required. Playground Dress Code for Winter The students will go outside for noon recess if the temperature or wind chill is 5 degrees above zero or warmer. If the temperature or wind chill is less than 5 degrees above zero, the students will stay inside for noon recess. To insure the health and safety of our students and to care for our carpeted building, we recommend the following in inclement weather: In cold weather all students must wear warm coats, snow pants, hats, gloves and boots. In wet weather all students must have boots or an extra pair of shoes. If the appropriate clothing is not worn and no extras are available in Lost andFound, students in grades 1-3 will be supervised in the cafeteria and students in grades 4-6 will go to study hall in the fifth grade classroom. Playground Guidelines The paraprofessionals will instruct parent volunteers as to the area of the Playground which they are to supervise. The adults need to spread out across the different play areas to ensure maximum supervision of all students. Students may play on the playground equipment, the lawn (grass), or on the tar north of the orange cones. Students must stay on the tar on days when the ground is very wet or muddy. Students may sit or play under the trees, but are not to throw balls in them, climb them, nor pull or break the branches. Students are not permitted to throw rocks, dirt, sand, sticks, snowballs or anything else that might harm another person. Organized games, such as touch or flag football, kickball, freeze tag, etc., are to be played on the lawn (grass or snow). Four square, basketball and other games that do not encourage a lot of running may be played on the tar north of the cones. Students are not permitted to pile on top of each other, push, tackle, or pull on other students’ clothing. Playground Equipment: One person at a time on a swing, no jumping off. One way down the slide only -- no climbing up from the bottom. Climb only on the monkey bars, not on other pieces of the equipment. Only 3rd to 6th graders may sit on the top of the monkey bars. Students are to sit on the seats of the teeter-totter, not climb all over it. Authorized equipment that is brought to school must clearly be marked with the student’s name. Play all playground games according to the instructor’s directions. Do not change the rules. All accidents are to be reported to the playground supervisor immediately. The supervisor will attend to minor accidents. Winter Snow Guidelines When there is snow on the ground or piles of snow, students are encouraged to build snow forts, snowmen, houses, etc. They may not throw snowballs. Students may individually slide or roll down the snow pile, but are not to push other students off of it. Sleds are not permitted due to limited space on the snow piles and surrounding area. Playing “King of the Mountain” on the snow pile is not permitted. Indoor Recess Guidelines Students may laugh and talk with one another, but should not be screaming or yelling. Use inside voices. Students are to stay in the classroom during recess. Students needing to use the restroom or get a drink must ask for permission to leave the room and may only go one girl at a time and one boy at a time. Indoor activities include: playing table games on the floor, desk or table; playing with toys, talking with friends, reading books, drawing pictures, or any other quiet activity that the classroom teacher has given prior permission to do (see instructions from teacher at the bottom of the chart in each classroom). Games and toys should be used in the way they were designed to be used. Students may not throw balls, Frisbees, paper airplanes, etc., without prior permission from the classroom teacher (see instructions at the bottom of the chart). Students may not play any tag-type or chasing games. Students may not climb on desks, chairs, or tables. Students are not permitted to pile on top of each other, kick, hit, push, tackle or pull on other students’ clothing. Students should begin to clean up the classroom 5 minutes prior to the teacher returning to the class: 1st - 3rd grades at 12:35 p.m.; 4th - 6th grades at 12:55 p.m. |
